Until we can find out for certain what chemical changes occur when someone becomes depressed, and find out what triggers them, we will not even begin to be able to discover whether one can prevent depression. As with a tendency towards anxiety, it does appear that some people are more inclined to become depressed than others. We cannot say, however, that anyone has actually prevent depression until we are able to expose people to its causes and observe their minds and bodies resisting it as a result of some kind of preventive action. Nevertheless, if we consider what depressed people regard as the causes of their illness, it may offer some guidance as to possible preventative measures. What are the ways for the Prevention of Depression? Prevention of Depression -through the way we think:We already know that two people can experience identical events and yet one may become depressed as a result whereas the other does not. The only difference between them is the way in which they think about what has happened and how it affects them.

The way we think affects the way our body behaves and this inturn influences the way we feel.Depression Prevention - through the balance theory:Whether it is treated or not, depression seems to disappear quite suddenly. It may take weeks or over a year, but it happens. It may come back if the conditions which caused it are repeated, but it seems that the body adjusts itself to the imbalance in the system and rights itself - untill the next time. Prevention of Depression -through the state-dependent theory:It has been found that we remember incidents according to the way we felt at the time. This is called state dependent memory, and it means we do not remember the past in neutral terms, seeing both sides of any situation.

The rule is therefore to try and allow yourself to see something positive in everything. If you find something positive in even the worst that befalls you, then you have cracked it!Depression Prevention -through the acceptance theory:We only have the power to control our own thoughts and actions. No matter how much we try and control others, we cannot. We must accept other people just as they are; it is upto them to change themselves if they want to. Nobody has the right to control another.

The only possible exception to this is a parent's right to hold control of a child in trust untill that child is able to take over. What we have to learn is acceptance..

Alternative treatments for depression are gaining in popularity
as the side effects of common antidepressant medications are
becoming better understood.
Weight gain, dry mouth, constipation, headache, blurred vision
and diarrhea are just a few of the many potential adverse
reactions to prescription depression medications...alternative
cures present a safer, often equally effective solution.
There are different manifestations of the depressive state.
Depression may be chronic and ongoing, showing itself in an
overall decreased level of functioning. Depression may also be
cyclical, with the individual suffering emotional extremes (i.e.
elation or despair, euphoria or grief). Whatever form
depression takes, the ultimate result is the same. It is an
extremely serious condition that can impede an individual's self
esteem, their ability to cope with stress and their capacity for
meaningful relationships.

However, although depression can be a
severe physical and psychological condition, the good news is
that it is very treatable.
Cognitive and behavioral therapy are two psychological treatment
methods for depression. Cognitive therapy teaches the patient
to recognize negative feelings and thinking patterns that spark
the depression cycle. Behavioral therapy focuses on teaching
the patient to reinforce positive behaviors and coping methods
as they apply to everyday activities. Both treatments have
measured success, but require great investment and commitment on
the part of the patient.
Alternative treatments for depression can be used in conjunction
with medication and other psychological approaches for a more
holistic technique. Hypnotherapy is one example of a
non-traditional approach to depression.

There are many
different forms of hypnotherapy available, each using a
combination of breath, regression, sound and/or visual imagery.
The main difference between hypnotherapy and other psychological
treatment methods for depression is that hypnotherapy brings
about quicker results than other methods by immediately
addressing subconscious issues.
You might say that behavioral and cognitive therapy take a
circuitous route to arrive at a cure, while hypnotherapy cuts
right to the chase. Hypnotherapy can act as a catalyst for
other psychological treatment methods for depression. It can
jump start the patient on the road to recovery, while a
combination of drugs and other psychological approaches can
reinforce positive behaviors.
Alternative treatments for depression can also include
meditation. There are two schools of thought regarding this
technique.

The first is that meditation can help to calm the
heightened anxiety and worry that depression can bring about.
Breathing exercises and repetitive mantras can help to address
nervousness and unease. Others believe that the increased state
of self-observation during meditation can bring about an even
greater sense of despondency and should not be used without the
guidance of an experienced meditation practitioner. Regardless,
meditation remains one of the most popular alternative cures for
depression.
The bottom line is that depression can have very serious mental,
emotional and physical consequences. Alternative treatments for
depression such as hypnotherapy and meditation can offer a safe,
effective solution as well as help you avoid the potential side
effects of prescription medications.

Queensland, Australia (ContentDesk) December 13, 2005 -- Depression is predicted to be the 2nd leading cause of disability worldwide by 2020 and it is already the leading cause of disability in the US. It is unfortunate that with 18.8 Million Americans suffering from depression, most of them are uninformed when it comes to the causes of depressive disorders. The physical symptoms recognized as real but the thought patterns that cause the symptoms are commonly ignored. This results in widespread use of depression medications like SSRIs that are designed to temporarily lift moods, which ease the immediate physical symptoms. SSRIs can work very well and be a welcome relief for sufferers, but they come at a price.

Adverse side effects including dependency are common and increase with prolonged use. When the medication stops so does its benefits and if the causes are not dealt with, it is back to square one again. Lots of therapies can be brought out for the proper treatment of Anxiety and Depression.

Physicians hold consultation sessions to understand patient's mental condition and then proceed to give appropriate medical aid. Anti-Anxiety Medications, Anti-Depressants, Mood Stabilizers and other medications aimed at alleviating symptoms are quite helpful in treating anxiety. At times, when treatment fails in case of Depression, Electroconvulsive Therapy is provided to the patient.. Even few Self-Help Support Groups' help people in treating their problems by making them sit with others and hear the other experiences to get out the situation.

Anxiety and Depression are the two forms of phobias and behavioral disorders which can casts a very bad spell on any human being. The former is a type of an emotional disorder caused due to the imbalance in the body of a person. Whereas the latter is a form of a behavioral disorder caused due to chemical imbalance in the nervous systems of the person. There are a variety of symptoms of these behavioral and emotional disorders, ranging differently for a child and an adult person. Let's first consider Anxiety and Depression symptoms among the children.

Children, like adults, can not express their feelings or problems. It is we who have to look for the Anxiety and Depression Symptoms in them. The symptoms seen in childhood can be sadness, hopelessness, powerlessness, lack of interest and prone to get irritated easily. As the world of children is controlled by adults, some are bound to feel dominated and hence suffer from severe Anxiety and Depression. The symptom of Anxiety and Depression has a somewhat different face for the teenagers. Continual sadness, weariness, bad temper, change in appetite, sleeping disorders, severe aches and pains, low concentration levels and suicidal thoughts are some of the common Anxiety and Depression Symptoms seen among the teenagers.

A Lot of stress and persistant dominance of teachers/ parents takes them towards these problems. Even the adult people suffer greatly from Anxiety and Depression. It is because they are either unable to do anything themselves or are not able to share their problems with others. Some of the common Anxiety and Depression Symptoms seen in adults are insomnia, hopelessness, dizziness, nausea, difficulty in breathing, negativity, feeling of guilt, loss of energy and loss of appetite and weight. All these symptoms of Anxiety and Depression can be treated with the help of therapies and appropriate medications. Every type of a symptom needs a special kind of medical aid such as Cognitive Therapies, Consultation Sessions and Anti- Depression medicines.

Appropriate Medical Treatment can help the person to reduce the levels of Anxiety and Depression..

Copyright 2006 Christopher Green

One of the most common flawed modes of behavior performed by every sufferer who enters into a harrowing episode of stress, depression or anxiety concerns the words they use to describe situations and events they are confronted with. In using powerful, emotive words, sufferers will trigger the fear response and the more they use such words, the worse their suffering gets.

Powerful, emotive words are part of everybody's vocabulary. Sometimes, we use powerful words when we lose our temper or we become angry and frustrated. In this state, we give vent to our feelings and the emotions within us have an outlet.

This is fine. For most people, once their emotions have been expressed, they return to their usual selves and life carries on as normal.

But it doesn't work like this if you are prone to stress, depression or anxiety.

In these states, sufferers will react negatively to every event they are confronted with in their lives.

One of the negative reactions concerns using powerful and emotive words that can make even the most insignificant of events a major problem. Words can and do have that much power and in this article, I'm going to show you how this works with three of the worst words you can use to assign meanings to events. They are:

Nothing, everything and never.

For example, let's say your relationship with your spouse breaks down. Here's how using the above words can trigger stress, depression or anxiety:

"Well that's it. EVERYTHING has gone wrong in my life.

I'm NOTHING without him/her and I know I'll NEVER be happy ever again."

Can you see how flawed this highly emotive reaction is and can you see how these words ? seemingly innocuous by themselves ? have made one event a major, stressful episode by assigning a catastrophic meaning to your whole life?

To avoid arousing such fearful emotions, here are three better, much less emotive words you can use to lower the intensity:

For everything, use ONLY. For Never, use TEMPORARY. For nothing, use SOME.

So let's use these words to find a less intense meaning to the event in our example, the breakdown of an intimate relationship:

"OK, my relationship is over, but it ONLY affects my love life. SOME things will change but other areas of my life ? my work, my friendships, my hobbies and my social life will carry on as normally as possible. I'm hurting now, but this is TEMPORARY and things will get better in due course."

Can you see how using different words can dramatically reduce the impact and make much clearer sense of the event? This is exactly why some people never enter into a stressful, depressive or anxious episode even when they are faced with the most trying of circumstances, such as relationship breakdown.

Everything, nothing and never are just three of the emotive words used by sufferers.

There are many more ? including expletives that are far too strong to use here ? but if you use the three alternatives I've given in this article, you will drastically reduce the chances of entering into an episode of stress, depression and anxiety.

Be aware of the words you use to assign meanings ? mind your language!

See you soon.

While war and poor economic conditions begin to affect people all over the world, more and more people suffer with depression. The more we focus on news events and the business climate, the more we are depressed. Whatever the reason you feel is the cause of your depression, the following five simple tips guarantee you reduce it significantly.1. Do not read newspapers. Newspapers publish negative stories most of the time.

Even in peaceful periods, newspapers will find the worst in humanity and place negative stories on display in order to promote sales and subscribers. Stories focused on War, rebellion, death, destruction, doom and despair abound in the newspapers. Stop reading the newspaper and reduce the negative input to your brain.2. Turn off your television.Watching and listening about the horrible economy and the losses associated with War will add to depression. In fact, you guarantee the feeling of helplessness.

Helplessness allows depression to nurture. If you really need to watch or listen to these kinds of news stories, promise yourself you will bury yourself in the documentaries that are sure to follow in the next 5 or 10 years. A way you can eliminate most of the negative input to your brain is by setting it aside for a date somewhere in the future. I guarantee in the future, you will not find it very interesting. When visitors come to your home, make sure you turn off your television and keep it off. News television broadcasters are fighting for your guests' attention as they promote despair, war, death, and destruction with many headline news interruptions.

Those little banners that run across the bottom of the screen achieve your attention and they take hold of your consciousness. Television will diminish your positive spirit.3. Say good things about othersMy Mother always says, "if you can't say anything nice about others, don't say anything at all." However, when you find yourself in a conversation and a relative says, "Remember Uncle Phil?" " He was an alcoholic" Respond with " yes, Uncle Phil was an alcoholic and he was the most charitable person, I have ever met."Connect your friend's negative statement about Phil with a positive one. Set yourself up to find the positive in anyone's statement and you will keep negative thoughts and depression from overtaking your life.4. Get physical exerciseAdults forget about exercise when suffering from depression.

Make sure you are exercising daily and sending more oxygen to your brain cells. The result of exercise will improve your health as well as your attitude.5. Breathe deep and relax.Practice the following breathing exercise to relax your body and mind.Breathe deeply and relax. For 3 minutes each hour take a short mental vacation. You can engage in this exercise while you are standing in the checkout line at the supermarket or when listening to others while talking on a telephone. You can complete the exercise at home or at work.Take three deep breathes and relax.

As you inhale, concentrate on calm and peaceful thoughts. You may think about relaxing by a mountain, by the ocean or comfortably in your favorite room at home.As you exhale, concentrate on pushing any tension out of your lungs.Focus on positive images in your life. Focus on laughter, love, excitement, and hope.Keep breathing in and out in this pattern until you feel better. If you practice the exercise often, you will notice wonderful changes in your outlook and in other aspects of your life.Reduce your depression now! Enjoy your holidays, family, your friends, and your life.--Wayne F. Perkins.

Medical professionals and acne-pestered adolescents have no doubts about the effectiveness of the severe acne drug isotretinoin. It's the looming possibility of side effects such as depression and fetal damage that makes people uneasy when considering using this medication. Accutane (isotretinoin) is one of Hoffman-LaRoche's most popular and controversial pharmaceuticals. This week, a study published in the Archives of Dermatology vindicated isotretinoin from causing depression. In this report, Christina Y.

Chia, MD, from Saint Louis University Health Sciences Center, St. Louis, and colleagues examined whether patients with moderate to severe acne treated with isotretinoin experienced an increase in depressive symptoms compared with patients treated with a topical antibiotic, topical retinoid, and an oral antibiotic.Dr. Chia found that "The use of isotretinoin in the treatment of moderate-severe acne in adolescents did not increase depressive symptoms. On the contrary, our study shows that treatment of acne improves depressive symptoms".Five years earlier, in 2000, the isotretinoin-depression link still appeared misleading. That time, the Archives of Dermatology posted study, headed by Dr.

Susan S. Jick, from the Boston University School of Medicine, which found no evidence that isotretinoin increases the risk for depression, suicide, or other psychiatric disorders.Even though isotretinoin finds ample support among dermatologists and psychiatrists, a host of parents, politicians and medical professionals hail isotretinoin as a medical misfortune. For instance, Dr. David J. Graham, the Associate Director for Science and Medicine in FDA's Office of Drug Safety, recently warned that Accutane should be taken off the market.

And while there are few studies with any negative observations about isotretinoin, Dr. Douglas Bremner's research at of the Emory University School of Medicine has linked isotretinoin treatment with changes in brain function. At the conclusion of this study, published in the American Journal of Psychiatry, Dr. Bremner concurred with Dr. Graham's view that isotretinoin proves too dangerous for human use.Dr.

Bremner explains that to invoke depression, isotretinoin must influence the brain. During the investigation, brain function of the subjects was measured using positron emission tomography (PET) before and after four months of treatment with isotretinoin. Isotretinoin treatment was associated with decreased brain metabolism in the orbitofrontal cortex- the area of the brain known to mediate symptoms of depression. Yet, there were no differences in severity of depressive symptoms between the isotretinoin and antibiotic treatment groups before or after treatment. The pessimistic effects of isotretinoin also caught the attention of Diane K.

Wysowski PhD. Dr. Wysowski noted that in June 2000, isotretinoin ranked among the top 10 drugs linked to depression and suicide attempts in the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System database. In 2001, Dr. Wysowski examined isotretinoin's depression inducing potential and posted her findings in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Dr. Wysowski concluded that more studies of isotretinoin are needed. She also advised patients and their parents to immediately report mood swings and symptoms that are suggestive of depression such as sadness, crying, loss of appetite, unusual fatigue, withdrawal, and inability to concentrate to their prescribing physician. These protective measures can avoid more serious side effects and permit appropriate treatment, including consideration of drug discontinuation and referral for psychiatric care. While dissension among researchers still exists about whether or not isotretinoin causes depression, one idea most of them can agree on is that more research on the side effects of isotretinoin are desirable.

If you are not in the mood for being an isotretinoin guinea pig, Geoffrey Redmond MD, author of The Good News about Women's Hormones, suggests using hormone therapy and/or using Retin-A if isotretinoin seems too chancy for you..
